I never had a good answer to this question. But made a great observation today.
My dad who is on Windows is always calling me with questions on how to do things. I usually walk him through all the steps; hear some grumbling, try a couple different ways and eventually the task is solved.
Today he calls because my mom has asked him over the phone to check for an email attachment. So he calls me first thing, says he’s really going to need my help because now he’s got to use one of those weird Macs. So I do a little experiment and just listen to him get through this one on his own.
He manages to find the glowing power button and figures out to press it. Quickly sees the doc with the bouncing email icon. Complains about the confusion of not having enough buttons on the mouse and is surprised as the application is open right in front of him. I stay quite as he intuitively gets the info he was looking for.
Seems like the only step I walked him through was telling him that “it was easy” and “he could do it”.
